Updated: Jun 15
Are you an Alberta parent who is looking for an English tutor? If so, you're in the right place!
I am an English tutor who has helped over one hundred high school students build confidence in reading comprehension, essay writing, and diploma exam preparation. In this post, you'll learn about my background, teaching approach, and what makes my tutoring services different.
About Me

Hello! My name is Heather. I am an online English tutor based out of Calgary, Alberta. Throughout my seven years of tutoring experience, I have worked with high school students that are located in Edmonton, Calgary, Lethbridge and beyond!
One of my specialties is helping Alberta ELA students with standardized tests, including ELA Diplomas and Grade 9 PATs. I know how stressful these exams can be. As a high school student, I was not offered a lot of guidance or strategies for these exams. My goal is to provide actionable steps that students can take to feel prepared and confident on exam day.
I have helped students with many different learning styles and needs, including students with ADHD and FASD. I'm passionate about ensuring that everyone I work with gets the resources and guidance they need to learn.
My ELA Tutoring Approach
Improving any skill takes practice. In my sessions, I prioritize offering Alberta curriculum-aligned prompts and reading comprehension questions to ensure that students get the hands-on experience they need.
During our sessions, students will:
Learn step-by-step approaches to planning essays
Receive detailed, personalized feedback
Practice their writing with Alberta curriculum-aligned prompts
Build confidence in their writing skills
Learn essential reading comprehension strategies
The Outcomes
Students who work with me are able to attain:
The ability to make clear, concise thesis statements
Confidence in reading comprehension
The ability to plan insightful essays
A strong understanding of what is (and is not) significant within a text
Essential time management skills for in-class essays
And more!

Why Choose Me?
Many tutoring services rely on university students who may have strong academic backgrounds but limited teaching experience. While these tutors can be helpful, effective tutoring requires more than strong grades. Tutors must be able to explain concepts clearly, adapt to different learning styles, and provide proven strategies for important exams like PATs and Diplomas.
I was one of those tutors who began as a post-secondary student. It was a big learning curve at first. However, over the years, I have gathered many resources and strategies to help make English as approachable as possible for students. I also have a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature, which allows me to help students learn essential writing habits that will set them up for success in post-secondary environments.
I truly care about every one of my students. As a tutor, I am dedicated to showing up for my students both within and outside of our sessions. If students have questions throughout the week, or would like feedback on their work, I am always happy to help.
Continuity, practice, and support are the keys to academic growth. I prioritize all of these aspects of learning in my tutoring services.
Resources to Support Student Success
Every student who works with me gets access to two resources: my Ultimate Essay Handbook, which can be purchased on my website, and my ELA 30-1 Part B reading comprehension handbook (which is for my students exclusively).
These guides were created to help students feel confident, prepared, and fully supported, both during tutoring sessions and while studying independently at home.
Many students struggle with essays not because they are poor writers, but because they do not understand how to plan for and structure their essays.
My Ultimate Essay Handbook breaks down the entire essay-writing process step by step, including:
How to write strong thesis statements
How to create insightful topic sentences
How to develop strong evidence and analysis
How to write effective introductions and conclusions
How to identify and use evidence from a text
This resource gives students a clear framework they can return to again and again, helping them write with greater confidence and clarity.
Part B of the Alberta Diploma Exam can feel overwhelming for many students.
My Part B Handbook helps students prepare with targeted strategies for:
Reading comprehension
Identifying significant details in texts
Understanding theme and author choices
Approaching multiple-choice and written-response questions
Understanding literary devices
Managing time effectively during the exam
Instead of leaving their mark to chance, students learn practical strategies they can apply immediately on exam day.
Why These Resources Help Alberta ELA Students
Success in English is not about memorizing the “right” answer; instead, it is about learning critical thinking and writing skills. Students often need to review core ELA concepts many times before they are able to understand and apply them. These handbooks allow students to review essential material as many times as they need!
